Complete Description

"Polish Mathematical Olympiad Problems" provides an unparalleled collection of mathematical challenges that have tested the creativity and analytical skills of Poland's brightest young minds since 1949. The Polish Mathematical Olympiad is widely recognized for its innovative problems that often require elegant insights rather than complex technical knowledge.

This volume presents more than 300 carefully selected problems from both regional and national competitions, organized thematically to help readers develop a systematic approach to problem-solving. Each section begins with more accessible problems before progressing to more challenging ones, making the book suitable for a wide range of readers from motivated high school students to undergraduate mathematics majors.

What sets this collection apart is the exceptional quality of the solutions. Rather than presenting just the final answer, each solution includes a detailed explanation of the underlying thought process, alternative approaches, and connections to broader mathematical concepts. This pedagogical approach transforms the book from a mere collection of problems into an effective teaching tool for developing mathematical thinking.

The book also includes historical context about the Polish Olympic tradition and profiles of notable past participants who went on to make significant contributions to mathematics. These include figures like Stanisław Ulam, who played a crucial role in the Manhattan Project and made fundamental contributions to set theory and mathematical physics.

Whether you're preparing for mathematical competitions, looking to sharpen your problem-solving skills, or simply enjoy the challenge of elegant mathematical puzzles, this collection offers a wealth of material that will both challenge and inspire.

About the Editors

Dr. Piotr Nowak has been involved with the Polish Mathematical Olympiad for over 25 years, first as a participant (winning gold medals in 1995 and 1996), then as a problem creator and committee member. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Warsaw and currently teaches at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Dr. Nowak has coached Poland's International Mathematical Olympiad team to numerous medals and has authored several books on mathematical problem-solving.

Dr. Anna Wiśniewska is a mathematician specializing in discrete mathematics and combinatorics at Jagiellonian University. She has served on the Polish Mathematical Olympiad committee since 2008 and has been instrumental in expanding participation among female students. Dr. Wiśniewska has compiled and edited several collections of mathematical problems and contributes regularly to mathematics education journals.

Together, Nowak and Wiśniewska have created a volume that not only preserves the rich heritage of Polish mathematical competitions but also makes these valuable problems accessible to an international audience. Their careful selection and thoughtful organization reflect both their mathematical expertise and their deep experience in mathematics education.

As a high school math teacher who coaches our math competition team, I've found this book to be an absolute treasure. The problems are beautifully selected to showcase elegant mathematical thinking, and the detailed solutions are invaluable teaching tools. I appreciate how the book is organized by topic rather than by competition year, making it easy to focus on specific areas where students need practice. The historical context and profiles of past competitors also help inspire my students by connecting the problems to the human side of mathematics.

I participated in the Polish Mathematical Olympiad in the early 2000s, and this collection brings back wonderful memories. The selection of problems is excellent—a perfect mix of classics and lesser-known gems. The solutions are clear and insightful, often showing multiple approaches to the same problem. I particularly appreciate the historical notes about the competition and notable participants. My only suggestion would be to include more of the very recent problems from the last 5-10 years, but this is a minor point in an otherwise outstanding collection.

I'm a high school junior preparing for math competitions, and while these problems are definitely challenging, they're presented in a way that makes them approachable. The progression from easier to more difficult problems within each section is helpful. Some of the solutions assume more background knowledge than I currently have, which can be frustrating, but I've still learned a lot from working through them. The geometry problems are particularly beautiful and have helped me develop a deeper understanding of geometric reasoning.
